Manuel Ponce

Sante Tursi guitar

Suite in D major, Four Pieces

Variations on Folia d’Espana & Fugue

Ponce’s music embodies better of any other the aesthetic of Segovia: the impassioned recovery of the folklore of his own country is elaborated in a happy and balanced synthesis among his own popular cultural training and the European musical culture, consequent to his Parisian living and the studies of composition with Paul Dukas to the Ecole Normale de Musique. The guitar seems to be the ideal instrument to express the salient caatteristichs of Ponce’s musical aesthetic: the delicate sonorità, his essentiality, the harmony closer to the French impressionists and the Spanish school. His attention focuses on the repertoire of the popoluar melodies, particularly on the Zacatecas’ popular songsa nd on the romantic Europian piano music, to which he was devoted he was young. The cycle of sonatas, among which “Romantic” and “Classical”, respectively dedicated to Schubert and Sor, the 24 preludes, the “Thème varié ci finale”, the “Concierto del sur” for guitar and orchestra testify the great variety of forms and styles that Ponce magistrally managed arriving even, in certain cases, to publish his own compositions under other name.
Sante Tursi in this cd recoups and engraves really one of these works: the Suite in D major attributed a first time to Alessandro Scarlatti and subsequently recognized as his own, a real joke based on the perfect knowledge of the formal and stylistic plant of the XVI-XVII centuries suites.

The 4 Piezas can be considered as a small suite of dances, being composed from a Mazurka, a Valse Worth, a Tropico and a Rumba characterised by the messican and sudamerican taste and form.

The cd is closed by the very beautiful twenty Variations Sur “Folia De Espana” Et Fugue, a real synthesis of the Ponce’s guitar language, that uses the famous “Follia” theme as a chance for a long detour of 20 variations, perfectly linked the one with the others, each one of them represent an original development of the theme of departure. It’s very difficult indeed to decide withc is the most beautiful.
The importance and the affection by Ponce for the classical guitar are well remembered by Segovia: “I would like to clearly express the incomparable importance that Ponce has had in the actual renewal of the guitar [… ]. He has raised the guitar above the poor artistic stature in which was found. Beside Turina, de Falla, Manén, Castelnuovo Tedesco, Tansinan, Villa Lobos, Torroba etc. but more plentifully of all of them, he has undertaken his noble crusade to free the beautiful prisoner. Thanks to him and to those that I have appointed the guitar was ransomed by music exclusively written by guitarists (1).” Sante Tursi in this cd seems to have indeed treasured these words giving us some impassioned, beautiful and pleasant versions. To mention the beautiful booklet written by Oscar Ghiglia.
